I attended this session. The audience ate it up. However, I thought some of the comments were smug and condescending to the point of being insulting. Mr. Abram said that boolean logic isn't teachable. Huh? (I learned it!). Mr. Abram also said that librarians killed Dialog. Huh? Experts like Peter Jasco and Barbara Quint wrote years ago about Dialog's missteps. Librarians flocked to the Web long before Dialog got it! One thing Dialog did do--teaching Boolean logic to a generation of librarians who could transfer the skill to the Web and other databases easily. Prof. Janes called dialog "librarian porn"--power and control and librarians liked being "gatekeepers." I disagree--I consider librarians to be facilitators. When patrons expressed an interest in how I found information, I would go out of my way to explain strategies, terms, etc., hoping to teach searching skills that they could use forever on their own.

[...] Although no recording of the session was made, Chris Strauber posted a transcript-like program summary to the LITA blog. The IG expresses its appreciation to Chris for this major effort. The posting is available at http://litablog.org/2006/06/24/the-ultimate-debate-who-controls-the-future-of-search/. This URL has been added to the IRIG’s page that lists Programs and Presentation Documents. [...]
