I don't think there's any commenting features on the articles themselves, so I'll leave another comment here:

Wang and Dawes' "The Next Generation Integrated Library System: A Promise Fulfilled" is an interesting article, but I think it omits some other serious contenders in "next generation ILS" -- both OCLC's WMS and Serial Solutions Inota are being marketted, and (as far as we can tell) designed in quite similar ways as Ex Libris's ALMA with regard to including electronic resources in integrated workflows.

Options are certainly good. It's noteworthy that the community-driven Kuali OLE is the only one of these products that will be runnable on a library's own servers (as opposed to being proprietary closed-source software running as a service on a commercial company's servers), but it's also unclear how big the market is for software you run yourself. There are undeniable advantages to software that runs as a service (both not having to run it yourself, and certain 'network effects' of design, which Alma, WMS, and Innota all mean to take advantage of) -- it would certainly be nice if you could have these without locking yourself into a closed-source black-box proprietary solution... but that option does not seem to be on the table.

I am not an expert in data repositories, but have gained some experience with metadata editing through my work with the Open Journal Systems script. I am co-Editor-in-Chief of an academic journal (Journal of Molecular Biochemistry; www.jmolbiochem.com) and also take care of all technical problems associated with the website, metadata editing and database submission of this journal.

Generally, apart from my scientific work, I am interested in working with metadata and data repositories. I think I would be able to help. Could you please let me know what lita editors are required to do?

Is there an RSS feed for latest ITAL articles published? i'd like to include such a feed in my aggregator, so as articles are published they show up in my feed. (It's just fine if they show up in batches all at once as a new issue is published).

However, my technology skills are rudimentary. I've heard of cloud technology. I've never created a map. I just learned how to creat a video.

Will my limited skills hinder my participation?

I hope that LITA and ALA will rewrite the open meeting policy in a more inclusive way. An open meeting which requires a conference registration is not an open meeting in any conventional sense. Two thoughts. 1) How LITA and ALA do their business should serve the membership--if we're requiring conference registration for meeting participation to pay the costs of the conference, that's backwards. That's making the conference the point, rather than the business being conducted. 2) People who would tune in for a committee meeting on a January weekend are exactly the sort of people we should encourage to participate, wherever they are located.

Karen, thanks for the explanation. I have a couple of questions:

1. You state "the ALA Policy Manual (7.4.4 and 7.4.5) currently stipulates that conference meetings declared to be open are open only to registered attendees, which complicates the popular interpretation of the Open Meeting Policy with regards to streaming technology." Last year, I chaired LITA's E-Participation Taskforce. We were tasked with figuring out how to share physical open meetings/conference sessions with virtual participants. Everything the taskforce recommended were open tools (like livestreaming). And the LITA Board formally accepted our findings in a board meeting.

So my question - did the LITA board go against ALA policy by recommending our findings? Or - how is one open meeting (ie., LITA Board) different from another open meeting (committee meeting)?

2. Why did Melissa post this response for you? Other board members post under their own name.

Thanks again for the responses!

As a member of ALA, I'd like you to elaborate on what legal liability issues might have resulted as a consequence of live-streaming a board meeting of LITA. This was not a conference session where there may have been proprietary issues in regards to content. This was a board meeting. In essence, it appears that the stance LITA and ALA are taking is that any member of the organization who can not attend a board meeting, a meeting of the membership, etc. that occurs at a conference because said member has not paid the conference fee, is not entitled to be even a silent participant in the proceedings. Is this the kind of openness the ALA wants to foster? In my opinions, ALA and LITA have failed librarians everywhere when the live streaming was stopped. The further failure is that ALA and LITA do not see this as an opportunity to provide the membership different levels of access to "open" meetings regardless of a members ability to pay a conference fee or travel to a remote location. This response seriously makes me question whether I want to continue as a member of ALA.

As a member of ALA, I’d like you to elaborate on what legal liability issues might have resulted as a consequence of live-streaming a board meeting of LITA. The further failure is that ALA and LITA do not see this as an opportunity to provide the membership different levels of access to “open” meetings regardless of a members ability to pay a conference fee or travel to a remote location. This response seriously makes me question whether I want to continue as a member of ALA.

I can't believe that Roy Tennant can talk about cloud computing with a straight face. The idea of cloud computing is based on cooperation and sharing among large groups of internet users.

Just a couple years ago, Tennant was one of the authors of OCLC's extremely restrictive record re-use policy, a policy that went totally against the principles of open data and open code. The policy was designed to protect the profits of a single corporation and served to greatly restrict data sharing among libraries. The policy that Tennant help write and promote was as anti-cloud as you can get.

Fortunately, OCLC and Tennant caved to the pressure that the ridiculous policy generated. That he is now talking up the virtues of cloud computing is beyone comprehension and demonstrates the height of hyprocrisy.
