The World (and Jason Griffey) interviews Vernor Vinge

On Saturday, January 8 at 1:30pm in Room 29 A-D of the San Diego Convention Center, I have the opportunity to interview an incredible author and thinker, Dr. Vernor Vinge. Dr. Vinge is most well known for being a multiple Hugo Award winning author, but he is also a Professor and technologist, famous for being a proponent of the idea of The Singularity. If you have time to pick up one of his works before ALA MidWinter 2011, I’d recommend Rainbows End…it has some of the most interesting discussions of libraries, digitization, augmented reality, and information immersion of any book in the last 50 years. Congratulations to LITA Members Selected as 2011 Emerging Leaders

The LITA Board of Directors is pleased to congratulate Bohyun Kim and Andreas Orphanides on being selected to participate in the ALA 2011 Emerging Leaders Program and on being selected for LITA sponsorship. LITA sponsorship includes a $1,000 stipend to help offset the costs of attending the 2011 Midwinter Meeting and the 2011 Annual Conference. In addition, Bohyun and Andreas will each work on LITA projects and be mentored by the LITA leadership. Bohyun is currently Digital Access Librarian at the Florida International University Medical Library. Andreas is currently Librarian for Digital Technologies and Learning at the North Carolina State University Libraries. The LITA Board wishes to ensure that its’ Emerging Leaders have meaningful leadership experiences within LITA, therefore Bohyun and Andreas will work closely with the LITA President-elect on aspects of the LITA strategic plan implementation. LITA offering two workshops in San Diego

LITA is offering two full-day educational workshops on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 in San Diego. Jason Clark of Montana State University is presenting Creating Library Web Services: Mashups and APIs. Participants will learn how to bring pieces of the Web together with library data: del.icio.us subject guides, Flickr library displays, YouTube library orientation. Learn what an API is and what it does, the components of Web services, how to build a mashup, how to work with PHP and how to create Web services for your library. Participants should be comfortable with HTML markup and have an interest in learning about Web scripting and programming and are encouraged to bring a laptop for hands-on participation. In addition, Amanda Hollister of LISHost.net will present Open Source CMS Playroom. This workshop will provide an overview of several content management systems, compare and contrast system functionality and features and demonstrate how open source CMSs…

Creating Library Web Services: Mashups and APIs, presented by Karen Coombs of the OCLC Developer Network and Jason Clark of Montana State University Libraries will be held 10 a.m. – noon CST from Nov. 15-19, 2010, with live synchronous lectures each day. This five-day course will help participants learn how to bring pieces of the Web together with library data: del.icio.us subject guides, Flickr library displays, YouTube library orientation. Learn what an API is and what it does, the components of Web services, how to build a mashup, how to work with PHP and how to create Web services for your library. LITA/Library Hi Tech award nominations sought

Nominations are being accepted for the 2011 LITA/Library Hi Tech Award, which is given each year to an individual or institution for outstanding achievement in communication for continuing education in library and information technology. Sponsored by the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), and Library Hi Tech, the award includes a citation of merit and a $1,000 stipend provided by Emerald Press, publishers of Library Hi Tech. The deadline for nominations is Dec. 1, 2010. The award, given to either an individual or an institution, may recognize a single seminal work or a body of work created during or continuing into the five years immediately preceding the award year. The body of work need not be limited to published texts, but can include course plans or actual courses and/or non-print publications such as visual media. More information and a list of previous…

Nominations sought for prestigious Kilgour research award

Nominations are invited for the 2011 Frederick G. Kilgour Award for Research in Library and Information Technology, sponsored by OCLC, Inc. and the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The deadline for nominations is December 31, 2010. The Kilgour Research Award recognizes research relevant to the development of information technologies, in particular research which shows promise of having a positive and substantive impact on any aspect of the publication, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information or how information and data are manipulated and managed. The Kilgour award consists of $2,000 cash, an award citation and an expense paid trip to the ALA Annual Conference (airfare and two nights lodging). Nominations will be accepted from any member of the American Library Association.
