2008 LITA Elections: Mona Couts

First up in our 2008 LITA Elections podcasts are the candidates for Director-at-Large, and first among the candidates (alphabetically, at least!) is Mona Couts. Hope that you enjoy the podcast, that it helps you to decide who you would like to see among LITA’s leadership in the upcoming year, and that you let us know both things. Don’t forget: Polls open March 17th, and you’ll be getting information in your email if you are a LITA member and eligible to vote. If you like these podcasts, and want to see us do more of them, please comment and let us know! As always, thanks to the wonderful David Lee King for his help with these podcasts.

LITA Election podcasts

Upcoming next week: the 2008 LITA Election podcast series! Last year we serenaded you with the dulcet tones of our nominees, to try and help you make informed choices about next year’s LITA Leadership. This year, we will do the same. All of the nominees were asked to participate in a question and answer session, and 6 of them took us up on the offer. With the help of the amazing David Lee King, we’re processing those interviews now, and will begin rolling them out next Monday, March 10th. We’ll have all of the audio out before the opening of the polls on March 17th, and we can all exercise our voting privileges. So make sure and swing by on Monday the 10th, and stay tuned all through the week. If you have any questions or problems with the podcasts as they are posted, please leave a comment and we’ll…

Statistics on the Production and Distribution of Books, Newspapers, etc.

Also forwarded from Cindy Hepfer, ALA Representative to NISO, is the following ISO Committee Draft of an International Standard issued for ballot: ISO/FDIS 9707, Information and documentation — Statistics on the production and distribution of books, newspapers, periodicals and electronic publications. Comments and vote recommendations from NISO members are due to NISO by March 7, 2008, but Cindy asks that any responses for this standard by be sent by March 4. Information provided about this standard by NISO: ======= Note: This is the final ballot stage prior to publication. Yes votes can only contain editorial (non-substantive) comments. Summary: This standard aims at giving guidance to the international publishing community on the keeping of publishing statistics. This revision primarily focuses on integrating the economic and technological changes in the media sector, and especially in the publishing industry. The scope has been enlarged to cover statistics on the production of electronic publications….

Public Libraries Technology Interest Group

Sunday: 8 – 10 a.m. Our first event/meeting was a big success with almost 30 participants. Thanks to everyone who attended. Paul Keith and Irmgarde Brown (co-chairs) welcomed everyone, gave a brief introduction to our new interest group and encouraged public librarians to join LITA. Our Discussion Topic Our guest speaker was Brian Auger from Howard County Public Library in Maryland. Brian shared a few facts about his system: 3rd wealthiest county in the country, second smallest population at 260,000 people, and yet they circulate over 2M items a year out of only 6 branches. Howard County started re-thinking their commitment to “traditional” computer software as Web-based technologies began emerging. It appeared to them that such a basic system should be cheaper and easier to secure. With the support of only 2 I.T. staff back then, the library began a slow evolution into Linux (first by implementing the Linux Firewalls…

First Days on the Job as LITA President

The ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans was an awe-inspiring experience on many levels. I was so overwhelmed by the gratitude of the New Orleaneans who could not have done a better job of making the 16,000+ visitors comfortable. New Orleans has a huge struggle ahead as the recovery has only begun. ALA set the example to the world that we believe in the city and want to help as much as possible in its recovery. Librarians not only helped economically by coming to the city, but many donated time and energy through volunteer service. I am proud to have attended the conference and even prouder that ALA chose to keep the conference in New Orleans. I began my LITA Presidency at the end of the day on Tuesday, June 27. I want to thank Pat Mullin for all he did in the past year as President. He has been…
